LYNYRD SKYNYRD – YET THEY ROCK ON!

September 1, Highland Park, IL, Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage with their debut performance at Ravinia. On this hot night many have gathered to pay their tribute to one of the rock legends of our time. The band did not disappoint their eager fans with songs like “Free Bird,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Simple Man,” and “That Smell.”
The original rock band, formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964. In 1973 gained popularity in the Southern States with time rising to worldwide fame. In 1977 three members including the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and one road crew member died in an airplane crash. Later the band reunited in 1987 for full-scale tour with the 5 pre-crash members headed by the deceased lead singer’s brother Jonnie on vocals.
After the tragedy and line-up changes the band keeps on rocking and amassing a significant following. This Southern rock and country band is an avid supporter of our troops as stated by Jonnie during the concert.

During the band’s existence they had many hits with several of their albums going platinum. They have also been nominated for numerous prestigious awards and inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

The band’s name under then spelling “Leonard Skinnerd,” was selected as a mocking tribute to a physical-education teacher, notorious for strictly enforcing the school’s policy against boys having long hair. In 1972 the band changed to a more distinctive spelling (Lynyrd Skynyrd) with the pronunciation reminiscent of their Southern roots.
This was a great show with the band rocking hard, the audience responding by the rising to their favorite songs, despite the stifling heat.
